It is not uncommon for Essentrics lovers to bemoan the lack of certified teachers in their areas. Many would like to benefit from a live session to ascertain that they are doing the movements correctly, and others simply enjoy the atmosphere of a group workout. Every week or month some new fitness program seems to surface and mushrooms via franchise operations. Essentrics classes, for all of their benefits and wonderful feel, on the other hand, are relatively scarce. Why is that?
Essentrics teachers need to be fit. Very fit.
The fitness industry is very diverse and so is the teacher qualifying process. Some programs only require you to attend a weekend workshop to earn the credential. Others require you to study and pass a two to three-hour multiple choice exam. Then there are those that require joining workshops and turning in a written test. For some programs, therefore, the trainer does not need to practice the craft but simply have the theoretical know-how.
In Essentrics a certifying teacher must go through not only written exams and multiple choice tests, but also provide live/video demonstration of movements and teaching quality. In fact, the demo carries the biggest weight in grading. This applies to all levels, from Level One through Level Four. Anyone who has taken a live class would know that Essentrics instructors do the whole workout AND talk the entire time. If you find the session rigorous imagine how fit your teacher needs to be! We aren't talking about looking big and buff or being rail thin like a fashion model. We're talking about having the stamina, strength, and endurance to complete a full-body workout while cueing and correcting clients simultaneously. (Talk about multitasking.)
In fact, for anyone who wants to qualify just as a Level One teacher, he or she must have taught at least 30 hour-long apprentice classes and demonstrate competence with form and techniques via video or a live exam. This is regardless of his or her age, training, or fitness background. Many teachers experience a fitness transformation by going through that process! While some fitness modalities boast that their teachers endure several months of training, it is common for Essentrics instructors to spend at least six months just to pass Level One. Many spend a few years to become fully certified.
There are no ready answers to Essentrics exams.
Another reason why there aren't more Essentrics instructor is that unlike other certifying programs, many answers to Essentrics exams aren't readily available in a textbook, manual, or the internet. This is especially true for Level Three and Four exams. At those levels instructors need to study the anatomy and biomechanics from textbooks and apps, in addition to digesting lots of info from independent research.
Some might argue that other fitness programs also require the study of anatomy. Yet in the case of Essentrics it doesn't stop at knowing the agonist, antagonist, synergist and stabilizer muscles for a movement in a multiple-choice test. You need to synthesize the info to grasp the big picture about how muscle chains work before you can come up with your exam answers. It is about connecting the dots and turning information into knowledge through critical thinking. On top of that he or she must know and show how to apply Essentrics techniques appropriately based on that learning. All these demand commitment, tenacity, and time.
What's more, even after passing the Level Three or Four exam, a teacher won't earn the credential before having a live interview with Miranda Esmonde-White, co-creator of Essentrics. There are no pre-set questions and the topics can be broad - teachers are understandably nervous about it! This final hurdle ensures that an instructor doesn't only focus on the questions in the exam but has truly grasped a wide body of knowledge to be an effective teacher. He or she is therefore capable of working with clients who have limitations such as restricted mobility, or special needs such as honing explosive power for athletic performance.
You know you're in good hands.
For these reasons there are fewer Essentrics instructors than what some clients would hope for. Yet the tradeoff is that when you take a class with a certified teacher you know you are in good hands. Every Essentrics instructor receives detailed feedback from the head office for every exam, including phone/Skype discussions. The rigor of training and grading ensures that those who take the path are truly dedicated and up for it!
